How CBT works

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works by looking at the links between our thoughts (cognitions), behaviour and emotions.

It is a talking therapy, based on looking at things logically, but also requires individuals to carry out practical tasks in between sessions. This form of therapy has been proven by research to help improve emotional and mental health.

CBT works on several levels:-

Thoughts tend to drive our actions and our emotions. CBT aims to interrupt and attempts to change any unhelpful or detrimental thought patterns. During therapy, you will learn to separate realistic from unrealistic thoughts and learn to test out the reality of your thoughts.

CBT will enable you to cope differently with intense emotions, and by reacting to them differently you will understand more about your emotions and how to deal with them. CBT also encourages you to behave in different ways, ways that are more helpful or productive in the long run.

Your sessions provide a safe and confidential environment to examine your feelings, and Dr Pilgrim encourages clients to be actively involved in their own improvement.

What happens at a session?

Your first session will be about getting to know you and identifying the particular issues you would like to work on. You will then be given a recommendation of how many sessions you may need (between 6-20 is the usual amount).

If you decide you’re comfortable and wish to take things further, we will help you to identify the outcomes you would like to achieve.

At future sessions, you may also be given simple tasks to do at home, such as writing things down, or practical exercises such as trying new approaches to situations. We adopt the approach that works best for you.

Weekly sessions are most effective at first, as this gets better results, and having regular sessions may mean you actually need less in the long run.
